Non-funded/Travel Vaccinations

non funded

Appointments

Patients requesting non-schedule and non-funded vaccinations should be seen initially by the nurse, who will administer the vaccines after consultation with the clinician.

Travel vaccinations procedure

Patients requesting travel vaccinations are initially seen by the travel nurse (40-minute appointment).

  1. The travel nurse consults with the patient and determines the vaccines required. If the patient is planning to travel, the travel nurse also provides additional travel health-related information and advice.
  2. The travel nurse provides further information about the vaccines including:
    • cost – must be paid before the vaccines are administered
    • number of doses and interval between doses (significant where travel is involved)
    • possible side effects.
  3. If the patient needs additional doses, add their name for recall and advise that they'll receive a reminder.
  4. Check the availability of the vaccine – some are held on site but others need to be ordered.
  5. The patient must provide written consent before the vaccination.

Refer to the Ministry of Health Immunisation Handbook for detailed information about vaccines and the CDC website for information about travel vaccines.

Charges for vaccines

Vaccines that need to be ordered in for the patient must be paid for in advance. Charges may include freight cost.

General considerations

Occupational vaccines for businesses

Patients sent for vaccinations by their workplace follow a separate protocol depending on their needs. A plan is discussed and agreed to by the nurse manager and medical director.

Payment for the entire course is expected at the outset and includes clinician consult, full vaccine cost, and nurse consult for each vaccine along with the cost for any blood testing required to determine immunisation status.
