Medicine Stock

Policy

We store medicines securely in accordance with the Medicines Act 1981.

We maintain a stock of medicines that is suitable for the needs of our practice, including all of the essential medicines required by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.

Medicines are stored securely so they can't be accessed by unauthorised people:

• Medicines are stored in the locked practice dispensary. The key code is shared with clinical team members only.
• Emergency medicines are stored in the emergency trolley.
• The PRIME kit is stored in the practice dispensary and used for all home and emergency visits. 

Medicines are not stored or prepared in areas where food and drinks are consumed.

A practice nurse checks stock levels regularly:

• Routine medicines: checked weekly
• Emergency medicines: checked weekly, or after use
• Emergency take-out box: checked monthly
