In the PDSA cycle, Study is where you look at the data you've collected up to this point, to see what effect your changes have had so far.

Evaluate progress so far

Is your project having the effect you hoped for?

Once you've implemented your plan, review all your data.

Gather your:

Review all the data and compare it to your baseline.

Create a graph of your numerical data if that helps – at this stage it just needs to be enough to help you understand the results you're seeing. You'll think more about the best way to display your results later.

Think about:

What have you learned?

Identify areas of improvement and any lessons learned so far.

As well as data, draw on your observations. Think about:

In your CQI report: Describe the STUDY step.

What happened?

Explain what you found from studying your data and observations.

What have you learned so far?

  • What did the data show?
  • How did the data compare to your predictions?
  • Was the quality of the data adequate?

Did the run as planned?

  • How well did your team respond to their roles?
  • Did you stick to the budget?
  • Did you need more full-time equivalent hours than expected?
  • Were your timeframes realistic?
  • What problems or unexpected events did you encounter?

You can include your raw data in your report if you want to.

Note: This section is a description of what you learned during the Study step. At this stage, the presentation of your data doesn't matter so long as you can use it for an interim comparison. You'll present a full analysis (with graphs and tables) for your report, later.
